CloudLinux.
Built for hosting companies.

The operating system purpose-built for shared and reseller hosting — with per-account CPU, RAM, and I/O isolation that prevents one user from impacting everyone else on the server.

Licensed add-on RHEL compatible LVE isolation cPanel & WHM
History & origin

The OS that solved shared hosting's biggest problem.

CloudLinux was founded by Igor Seletskiy and first released in 2010. It was built to address a fundamental problem with shared hosting: on a standard Linux server, one misbehaving account — a PHP script stuck in an infinite loop, a database query consuming all RAM — can take down every other account on the machine. Traditional shared hosting had no effective technical solution to this problem.

CloudLinux introduced Lightweight Virtual Environment (LVE) technology — a kernel-level resource isolation system that creates a separate virtual environment for each hosting account. CPU, RAM, disk I/O, and concurrent processes are each limited and enforced per-account. One account can hit its limits without affecting anyone else. This technology became the foundation of the shared hosting industry's stability guarantees.

Beyond LVE, CloudLinux developed a suite of security and performance tools that became industry standards: CageFS (per-user filesystem isolation), MySQL Governor (per-user database resource limits), and HardenedPHP (secure multi-PHP version support). Today CloudLinux powers the majority of shared hosting servers worldwide and is also the creator of AlmaLinux.

Pros & cons

What makes CloudLinux the right — and wrong — choice.

CloudLinux is a specialized OS for a specific purpose. If that purpose matches your workload, it's the best tool available. If it doesn't, you're paying for features you won't use.

✓ Pros
  • LVE isolation — one account's resource spike cannot affect other accounts on the server
  • CageFS — each user sees only their own files; cannot browse other users' directories
  • MySQL Governor — per-user database resource limits prevent single queries from consuming all DB capacity
  • HardenedPHP — run multiple PHP versions securely with vulnerability patching beyond upstream EOL
  • Industry standard — the overwhelming majority of shared hosting servers worldwide run CloudLinux
  • cPanel & WHM compatible — works seamlessly with cPanel, the most common hosting control panel
  • AlmaLinux upgrade path — in-place upgrade from AlmaLinux to CloudLinux is supported
✗ Cons
  • Licensed — commercial OS license required, billed separately on top of your Cloud Cube price
  • Overkill for single-site or single-tenant servers — LVE isolation adds overhead when you only have one user
  • Not supported by RemarkablePanel — Ubuntu is the only OS for our hosted panel
  • Conservative packages — same older package versions as AlmaLinux/RHEL
  • DNF/RPM ecosystem — not ideal for admins coming from Debian/Ubuntu backgrounds
Best for

CloudLinux is the right choice when you're hosting multiple clients.

If you're running a shared hosting business with multiple client accounts on one server, CloudLinux's isolation technology is not optional — it's essential.

Shared hosting businesses

The de-facto OS for shared hosting — LVE ensures one bad script doesn't take down all your clients' sites.

cPanel reseller hosting

CloudLinux + cPanel is the standard stack for WHM reseller hosting — most proven combination in the industry.

Multi-tenant environments

Any server where multiple untrusted users share resources — CageFS and LVE are the security and stability foundation.

DirectAdmin reseller hosting

CloudLinux is fully supported with DirectAdmin for reseller hosting without the cPanel license cost.

PHP-heavy workloads

HardenedPHP allows running legacy PHP versions securely — essential for hosting clients with older CMS platforms.

Database-heavy shared hosting

MySQL Governor prevents one client's poorly written queries from consuming all database server capacity.

Control panel compatibility

CloudLinux works with the most popular hosting panels.

cPanel is the most common pairing — but DirectAdmin and Enhance also work well with CloudLinux.
